Nova Scotia car insurance coverage options

When you're getting a car insurance quote in Nova Scotia, it’s important to know that there are some coverages that are required by law. You can also add optional coverages to increase your protection.

Mandatory car insurance coverage in Nova Scotia

  • Liability: This covers damage or injury you cause to someone else or their property in an accident. It also covers the cost of your legal defence if you’re sued for the accident.

  • Accident benefits: If you’re injured in an accident, this helps pay for some medical care, rehab and lost income – no matter who caused the accident.

  • Uninsured automobile: Protects you if you're in an accident with an uninsured or unidentified driver, allowing you to use your own insurance to pay for medical, rehab or vehicle repair costs.

  • Direct Compensation Property Damage (DCPD): If you’re in a collision and not at fault, this covers damage to your car and its contents through your own insurer. If you’re partly at fault, it covers the portion you’re not responsible for. Keep in mind, hit and runs aren’t covered under DCPD, so consider adding collision or upset coverage for that.

Optional car insurance coverage in Nova Scotia

  • Collision or upset: Covers repairs if your vehicle collides with another car or an object, like a guardrail or a snowbank. This also provides coverage if your car rolls over or if your vehicle is subject to a hit and run and reported to police within 24 hours.

  • Comprehensive: Covers loss or damage from non-collision events like theft, vandalism, fire or weather. Although collision and comprehensive coverage are optional, they’re highly recommended. Without them, you’ll have to cover the costs if any of the above happen.

  • Specified perils: Protects your car only against specific risks like fire, theft, hail or flooding.

  • Transportation costs: Helps pay for a rental car or transportation costs like public transit and ride share, while your vehicle is being repaired.

  • Accident forgiveness: Have a clean driving record for the past six years? We’ve got your back. Your first at-fault accident won’t change your rating. It only applies to your first at-fault accident. If there’s another one, accident forgiveness comes off your policy, and both accidents will count toward your rate.

  • Ticket forgiveness: Minor ticket? No big deal. If you’ve kept a clean record for six years, your first minor conviction won’t affect your rate at renewal. If you receive another minor ticket within three years of the first, this coverage ends. This means your rate will reflect both tickets – and any future ones.

  • All perils: The broadest coverage option. It includes all the benefits of collision and comprehensive protection. Plus, it covers you if your car is stolen by an employee or a member of your household.

  • Depreciation waiver: If your newly leased or owned car is a total loss, you could get the purchase price of your vehicle, without a reduction for age or wear and tear.

Nova Scotia auto insurance FAQs

Can I get auto insurance in Nova Scotia with a suspended or out-of-province licence?

To get auto insurance in Nova Scotia, you need to have a valid driver’s licence. Unfortunately, you can’t purchase a policy with Sonnet if your licence is suspended.

In Nova Scotia, out-of-province drivers with a valid licence from another province or country can drive in Nova Scotia for 90 days. After 90 days, they must apply for a Nova Scotia drivers' licence.

Keep in mind, when you move from one province to another your driving history and past claims transfer over as well. Any information the government has regarding your previous driver’s licence will be applied to your new one.

Does Nova Scotia have no-fault car insurance?

Yes, Nova Scotia has a “no-fault” car insurance system. But, the name can be misleading. “No fault” insurance actually refers to how a claim is paid out when an accident happens with another vehicle. In this type of system, you’ll always deal with your own insurance company, no matter who’s at fault in a collision.

How can I lower my car insurance rates in Nova Scotia?

One of the best ways to lower your car insurance rates is to prevent them from increasing at all! You can do this by driving safe to avoid accidents and tickets, and being conscious of how your vehicle’s year, make and model could affect your price if you’re buying a vehicle – some are more expensive to insure since they’re more likely to be stolen.

These aren’t the only ways to save money on car insurance. Add a group discount, bundle your home and auto together, or consider reducing physical damage coverage on an older car.
