Answers at your fingertips

We’ve worked hard to make insurance easy to understand. We simplified the quoting process, and we’ve re-written your coverage and policy details in plain language. You can also find answers online to your most frequently asked insurance questions, quickly and easily. Here are a few we get asked the most:

I’ve saved a quote, now what?

If you’re happy with your quote, you can go ahead and buy it – no call needed! Just like quoting with Sonnet, purchasing your policy is completed online through sonnet.ca in a few easy steps.

If you’re ready to purchase, the steps to buy are a little different depending on if you’re purchasing home insurance, auto insurance, or both, but in general, here’s what you’ll need to have ready:

  • Your exact coverage start date. Before clicking buy now, make sure the coverage start date is right and that it lines up with when you need insurance. You won’t be able to change this start date after purchasing.
  • Your phone – mobile or landline. As an extra security step, you’ll need your phone to complete our two-step verification. You’ll also be asked to complete this process when logging in to your account.
  • The name and mailing address of your leasing, financing or mortgage company (if applicable). These details will be required during purchasing, and it’s important that they are correct from the start of your policy.
  • A credit card or PayPal account to purchase your policy. If you’re making monthly payments, you’ll have to make a down payment with a credit card (VISA, MasterCard or Amex) or a PayPal account.

Heads up! Every customer will have a different experience. We take many factors into consideration when determining which payment plans are available (based on the information provided in your quote).

After purchasing, be sure to confirm your email address. This will give you full access to your Sonnet account. In your account, you can download your policy documents, including your proof of insurance and liability slip.

If you’re not ready to purchase, your quote will be saved for the next 45 days (as long as no changes are made) or until your selected coverage start date (whichever occurs first).

Is my quote the final price?

In general, yes! As long as all questions were answered accurately, this is your final price – it won’t change upon purchase.

However, there are a few scenarios where your quoted premium could change:

  • If you update the coverages or make certain changes in your saved quote. Updating coverages can raise or lower your quoted premium. Adding extra protections, for example – like Sewer Backup Coverage to your home policy – costs more and bump up your premium. On the other hand, if you raise your deductible, generally you’ll see your quoted premium go down.
  • If you change your coverage start date. Changing the date your policy starts could impact your premium, since the new date could push it into a new rating period.
  • If your saved quote has expired, or if the coverage start date you selected has passed. We will honour your saved premium for 45 days. After 45 days, your quote will expire and you’ll need to re-quote – and the premium will likely be different, even if your address, vehicle or situation hasn’t changed. If the coverage start date you chose is in the past, you’ll also need to re-quote – and your premium will change according to the rating period.
  • If we become aware of information that wasn’t originally disclosed. Our website’s advanced analytics pull information from your driving record and your claims history. If you forgot to disclose something (like a ticket or claim), we’re required to apply that information and re-rate accordingly.

If you have any questions about your quote, don’t hesitate to contact us via chat or email – these are the quickest way to get in touch, and we’re always happy to help!

What payment methods can I use for the down payment?

You can make your down payment using a credit card (VISA, MasterCard or Amex), or you can pay via your PayPal account. Either way, we’ll process this payment during purchasing.

Because payments can’t be processed instantly through bank withdrawal, this payment option isn’t offered for the down payment. Please note, we’re also unable to accept VISA Debit or MasterCard Debit as a credit card for the down payment. But, you can link these payment methods to your PayPal account to make the down payment.

You’ll also be able to change your payment method in your Sonnet account after purchasing.

How do I add a group discount?

Adding a group discount is easy.

  1. Look for the Group Discount field when getting a home or auto quote. Simply click “Employer or Association” and quickly search for the name of your employer, group, or association and select it from the suggestions that appear. We’ll ask for your group ID  to confirm your eligibility.
  2. If you’re a university or college alumni or student, click Canadian University or Canadian College. (If you’ve graduated from both, you can add both discounts and we’ll apply the one that gives you the best savings!) Quickly search for the name of your university or college. We’ll ask you for your graduation/expected graduation year to confirm your eligibility.
  3. Click Add Discount
  4. That’s it! Your group discount will automatically be applied to your quote. If we’re unable to verify your eligibility, then the discount will be removed.

How to get a car insurance quote online: A step-by-step guide

Here’s how to get car insurance with Sonnet. Sonnet is a completely digital insurance company – we use new technology that means you don’t have to answer many questions to get an instant car insurance quote that’s tailored to you. You can quote and buy your car insurance – all online.

Heads up! For the first question, enter in the year for the vehicle first – you’ll get a drop-down list as you keep entering in the vehicle information. Also, enter your address as it is recognized by Canada Post. Your address should pre-populate as you enter it into the field.

Step 2: Add additional vehicles

If you have more than one vehicle, be sure to click on “Add another vehicle”. Enter your coverage start date – this is when you’d want your insurance to start. Then, click continue.

Step 3: Enter your personal information

The next page is “Tell us about yourself”. Here's where you enter your personal information. You can also add a group discount to see if you qualify for any further price reductions to your quote. You’ll also have to agree to the address validation to move on. Then, click continue.

Heads up! You must be the vehicle owner to get a quote. If you’re just a driver, the vehicle owner will need to enter in their information here.

Step 4: Add any other drivers

On the following page, you’re asked if there are any other drivers in your home. If there are (even if they live away sometimes) click on “Add another driver”. If you’re the only driver in the household, click on “View your quotes”.

Heads up! Make sure you read the consent statement below “View your quotes”. This is where we verify the information you’ve provided to us.

Step 6: Add details if required

The next page can be different depending on a few circumstances. If you now see your quote it means there's one less step for you – skip to step 6.

If you see a screen that says "Almost there!", we just need you to enter in a few key pieces of information that we were unable to collect automatically from the databases we use. Once you’ve done so, click “View your quotes”.
