Filing an auto claim in Quebec

If you’re insured in Quebec, there are a couple of things to keep in mind in the event you have to file an auto claim. While having two insurance plans might be confusing, we’re here to help guide you through the process.

Publicly-funded insurance plan

Did you get hurt or hurt someone in an accident, in Quebec or elsewhere in the world? No need to worry since Quebec’s public insurance plan – the SAAQ – has you covered. Check out What you need to know about the SAAQ for more specific information on coverage.

Here’s how you file a claim under this plan.

Choose your filing method

The SAAQ provides you with a couple of options. You can choose to complete it online, use one of the four paper forms provided on their website or visit a service outlet. You’ll be given a claim number, no matter which filing method you choose, to help track your claim.

Note: You have a maximum of three years from the date of the accident to file a claim.

Get the details down

To complete your claim submission, have your personal information and accident details handy. The full list can be found on the SAAQ site, but you’ll definitely want to have your health insurance number, social insurance number, and driver’s licence number; as well as the accident date, time and info of those involved.

File your claim

You’ll need to send your original claim as well as the required documents either online, by fax or by mail. These include the initial medical report, proof of the accident and any receipts for the expenses incurred. You can also include any additional documents at the same time.

Private insurance plan

Along with your SAAQ plan, you’ll also require liability coverage to protect you in case of damage to another person’s property in- or outside Quebec. However, protecting your own property from damage in Quebec is optional. Filing for a claim may vary between insurance companies but here are the basics.

Contact authorities

Only if there are injuries, you’ll want to call the police and have a report filed. When you file your claim you’ll also want to send in this report.

Gather information

Get as much information as possible after an incident. This can help you a lot when it comes time to file a report. Quebec also has an optional Joint Report form, available on the Groupement des assureurs automobiles (GAA) website, to help speed up the claims process.

Let your insurer know

The most important step in filing your claim is letting your insurer know as soon as possible. You’ll want to have your policy number and the details of the incident handy.

Send in your supporting documents

Once your claim is opened, send in your supporting documents. These include photos, details and any expense bills from the incident. If you filled out a  Joint Report, you’ll want to include it here.

Once your claim is filed, and your insurer has determined fault, you’ll be on your way to receiving your settlement compensation. This process usually happens within 60 days.
