We love a good smartphone app that does double-duty. We found a number of apps that are useful on their own but also appeal to our inner insurance geek.

1. Home inventory apps.

Having an inventory of your belongings can help save a lot of time if you ever have to make a claim. MyStuff2 Home Inventory and Database is one option to consider. And don’t forget about your clothing – the cost of your clothes, shoes and other accessories can really add up! Stylebook Closet allows you to catalogue your wardrobe so you can see how many items you actually own.

2. Document scanning apps.

Turn your smartphone into a portable scanner that can scan important documents so you always have them ready when you need them (think receipts, appraisals or other proof of ownership documents). CamScanner offers a free version for Apple products, WinPhone and Android phones.

3. Vehicle care apps.

A well-maintained vehicle is a safer vehicle. But when you’re busy living your life, keeping track of your car’s maintenance schedule probably isn’t top of mind.  That’s when service reminder apps like Auto Care Free come in handy. You can set service reminders by date or by mileage. It can also log your gas fill-ups.

4. Remote monitoring apps.

The AtHome Camera app allows you to keep an eye on your home (or your pets or your kids) while you’re away. All you need are two devices (your smartphone and a tablet for instance) and you’re good to go. If you’re a new parent, you can also use a monitoring app as a baby monitor.
