[On-screen text: Jayna Hefford. Olympic Gold Medalist & Hockey Hall of Fame Member]
>>Doug Gilmour: She just came into my elevator. What are you doing here?
>>Jayna Hefford: I am here representing the Professional Women’s Hockey Player Association. So, I lead that group and we have 175 of the best women hockey players in the world. We are trying to create awareness for the need for a professional women’s hockey league. Up until now the women have struggled with the resources and infrastructure they need so we’re hoping we can push the game forward and really try to ensure the future is a lot brighter for the next young girls that want to play.
>>Doug Gilmour: And there is a lot of women’s hockey in Canada. There are over 85,000 girls and the biggest part is, we need a league!
>>Jayna Hefford: We do! We want to create something that is sustainable and long term and going to allow the next generation of young girl that wants to play the game to have a place to aspire to.
>>Doug Gilmour: This is something that you’ve gone through. I have seen over the past couple of years, especially the women going into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
[On-screen image: Doug Gilmour points to Jayna Hefford as she laughs]
>>Doug Gilmour: Right here! We just want to see more of it. We just want women’s hockey back!
>>Jayna Hefford: We do! We want to make sure the game is strong and that means for everyone. It means everyone in Canada – men, women, kids. We want the game to be healthy and creating a sustainable league for the women is going to allow young girls to look forward to something a little more realistic. I always hoped to play in the NHL and win Stanley Cups! So we want the girls to have something to aspire to, aspire to a league that they can get to as well.
>>Doug Gilmour: That is awesome. Well, again. Good luck with everything and your floor is here so, if you don’t mind, get out of my office.
[On-screen image: Jayne Hefford laughs and pats Doug on the shoulder]
