Coverage for items in storage
Blue storage unit

Whether you’re moving, downsizing or just temporarily storing some stuff, at some point, you’ll likely have a storage unit. There’s a reason that you’ve put these items in storage instead of getting rid of them – so make sure that they’re protected.

The storage facility is required to keep the storage premises secure. But, it’s not responsible for the contents of your unit. It’s on you to make sure that all of your belongings are covered. Not to worry, we’ve broken down how your home insurance covers items in storage.

Are the things in my storage unit covered by my home policy?

Most standard home, condo or tenant policies automatically cover you for items you have in storage – including portable storage containers. These items are considered “off-premises” and are covered in the same way that the belongings in your home are covered. This means any limits of conditions of your policy also applies to the items you have in storage.

However, you’re usually only covered for personal belongings kept at a storage facility for up to 90 days (or the expiry of your policy – whichever is first). So, if you plan to keep things in storage for longer than 90 days, then it’s best to purchase alternate coverage. This doesn’t apply if you have a storage locker in your condo or apartment building.

What are my belongings covered for?

Items in storage are most often covered for damage caused by:

  • Fire or smoke
  • Lightning
  • Theft
  • Vandalism
  • Windstorm damage
  • Water damage

You’re not likely to be covered for things like flood, earthquake, landslides, hail damage or sewer back-up.

Did you know? The typical insurance policy covers your stuff no matter where it is in the world – not just in storage. This includes the things of a family member living in a long-term care facility or a child away at school. Plus, your things are covered even while you’re moving.

Is there a limit on coverage for things in storage?

Just like the belongings in your home have a limit, the same applies to the things you have in storage.

  • Jewellery, furs, collectibles, silverware, bicycles, watercraft
  • Software, items stored at a bank, items at a nursing home, golf carts
  • Money or cash cards, business property, securities (stocks, bonds)

You’re not likely to be covered for things like flood, earthquake, landslides, hail damage or sewer back-up.

Heads up! Unless it’s specifically added to your home policy, you’re not covered for motorized vehicles. This includes cars, ATVs, dirt bikes, or motorcycles that are kept in storage. You would need separate insurance for these items.

Should I consider any extra coverage for things in storage?

There are a couple things we’d suggest to make sure you’re fully covered:

  • Increased coverage limits
  • Specific coverage for high-value items

If you’re planning for long-term storage beyond 90 days, we recommend buying a separate self-storage insurance policy. Remember, your homeowners policy won’t cover you beyond 90 days.

Anything else I should know?

Your policy covers more than just your stuff. It also covers you if you’re found legally liable for injury or property damage – even at the storage facility. Learn more about how liability coverage has you protected.
