What really happens when you file a claim?

Have you ever felt like the whole process of filing an insurance claim is a bit of a mystery? Or maybe you just want to know what to expect should you ever have to file a claim.

While we can’t speak for all insurance companies and how their claims process works, we can give you a high-level look at what will happen when you file a home or auto insurance claim with Sonnet.

1. You call with a claim

Many of the claims we receive can be resolved with just a phone call or two. If your claim is more complex, we’ll put you in touch with one of our dedicated claims professionals with the right experience to help you.

When you call, it will help to have these things on hand:

  • Your policy number

  • Facts about the claim (date, time, incident details, people involved, services used, vehicles involved, etc.)

  • Reference documents (policy documents, receipts, police report, your vehicle information, information about any other vehicles involved, etc.)

Once we've determined that you're eligible to make a claim, we'll walk you through the next steps.

2. We’ll help you with any necessary repairs

Whether you've had a burst pipe cause damage in your basement or experienced a fender bender, we'll help you take care of any repairs you might need. While our contractors and repair shops are chosen for their high-quality work, their reputation and financial stability, you can always go with your own vendor if that's what you prefer.

If you do decide to go with one of our recommended vendors, we'll guarantee the work that's done:

  • Home Repair Guarantee. Depending on your claim, we’ll send a pre-screened contractor to your home. If it’s needed, our contractors can start emergency work right away – no appraisal or estimate is needed, and work is guaranteed for two years.

  • Auto Repair Guarantee. Visit any of our pre-screened repair shops and book your on-site rental. Body and paintwork remain guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle.

3. Settling your claim

When it comes time to pay, we’ll mail you (or the contractor/repair shop) a cheque based on your coverage and the type of claim.
  • Home Claims. We’ll pay the actual cost to repair or replace your home, or up to the limit you selected (less the deductible).

  • Auto Claims. Depending on the damage, we’ll pay for the cost to repair your vehicle or give you the actual cash value (less the deductible). Either way, you’re covered.
