Is car insurance mandatory in Québec?

Yes. In order to legally drive in Québec, car owners must hold civil liability coverage of at least $50,000. This covers property damage or injuries you may cause to others.

Depending on your needs you might want to add optional protection for damage to your car, like collision. Collision isn’t required by law. But, it’s highly recommended if you want to avoid paying costly bills out of pocket should your car get damaged in an accident.
