Do you need insurance to rent a car in Ontario?

Yes, if you want to drive a rental car in Ontario you’ll need some kind of insurance coverage in case something happens. You don’t necessarily need to have your own auto insurance policy (if you’ve got a licence but don’t own a car, for example). But, you do still need insurance to drive the rental.

Here are your options for rental car insurance:

  • The rental car company. You can purchase insurance from the rental company at extra cost. But, it might not cover everything. Make sure you’re aware of the coverage they provide and what they don’t.
  • Your personal auto policy. If you’re a car owner and you do have your own car insurance, you can add an endorsement for rental car protection. At Sonnet, this comes as part of our Rental Extension Bundle. The bundle also includes Legal Liability For Damage to Non-Owned Automobiles.
  • Some credit cards. Your credit card might provide limited coverage for rental cars. Ask what is and isn’t covered so you can make an informed decision.
