It depends on the nature of the upgrades or modifications. If the modification is for accessibility reasons, such as adding a wheelchair lift to your van, you’re still covered. Cosmetic or performance enhancing-related changes that would increase the value of your car beyond a few hundred dollars would be considered significant. These modifications could be things like custom paintwork or swapping out the engine.
Unfortunately, Sonnet doesn’t offer coverage options for high-valued modified vehicles. This means that if you have a claim, those significant upgrades and/or modifications may not be covered because of the increased value of the vehicle. However, for some smaller vehicle modifications, you would receive Actual Cash Value in the event of a loss. If the modification is illegal (for example, the use of nitrous oxide in Ontario) it will not be covered.
