No, home insurance isn’t required by law in Québec. But, it’s in your best interest to have it. Why? Well, think about if the worst happens– like a fire, windstorm, or earthquake – and there’s damage to your home. Home insurance exists to get you back to where you need to be before the event happened, and covers the costly bills associated with repairing or even replacing your home.
House insurance also covers your personal belongings – but that’s not all. You’re covered for legal liability in case you accidentally injure someone or damage their property. You’ll even be provided with a place to stay and some cash for extra expenses (like food) if you can’t stay in your home due to a covered event (like a fire).
Heads up! If you have a mortgage, your lender will most likely need you to have a home insurance policy.
