In short, yes – you can cancel your car insurance with us at any point during your policy period. But, there are a few things to remember if you’re thinking of leaving us (and we hope you don’t!).
- Your policy must be in good standing. If you owe us a missed payment, you need to pay the full outstanding amount before you can cancel your car insurance with Sonnet.
- You could be charged a penalty. Many insurance companies – including Sonnet – apply what’s called a
short rate cancellation fee if you cancel mid-policy. The amount charged depends on where you are in your policy term – typically, penalty fees go down the closer you are to your renewal date. - You’ll lose your Accident Forgiveness (if you qualify for it). If you have
Accident Forgiveness with Sonnet and you’ve had an at-fault accident, it means we didn’t count your claim at renewal – which insurers normally do. If you change your insurance, your new provider will rate for that at-fault accident – your accident forgiveness doesn’t carry over. So, don’t be surprised if you see higher premiums when quoting with different providers!
