Everyone deserves a team

Our new series features some of the best hockey players in the world surprising deserving young players from Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal.

Sonnet teams up with the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund

Everyone deserves a chance to play hockey, and Sonnet Insurance and the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund are making sure deserving young players across the country have the chance to live their hockey dreams.

NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund

In 1999, the members of the NHLPA launched the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund to provide deserving children the opportunity to play the great sport of hockey. Since inception, the players' program has become the largest grassroots hockey program in the world by donating more than $25 million towards helping more than 80,000 children in 34 countries play hockey.

In addition to donating complete sets of new equipment, the players frequently look for ways to engage with the children from the programs the NHLPA Goals & Dreams supports both on and off the ice. During these unique and private interactions with the children, players provide guidance on hockey, nutrition, fitness and other life skills.

The NHLPA members are very proud of their program and encourage you to check out www.nhlpa.com if you would like to learn more and potentially join them in helping children in your community play the game of hockey.

>> DAVID AMBER: Hey everybody and welcome in to the latest great moment from the NHLPA’s Goals & Dream program.

[As David Amber continues, various SuperHEROS appear on-screen waving]

We’re going to connect with some SuperHEROS, some amazing kids in Regina and Edmonton.

[As David Amber continues, cut to the title animation]

[On-screen text: 'Everyone Deserves A Team', 'Edmonton', 'In partnership with']

If you’re not familiar with the NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams program, here’s what you need to know. They’ve been doing amazing work over the last 20 years,

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber and the SuperHEROS from Regina and Edmonton]

connecting kids to the game of hockey. 80,000 kids in 34 different countries

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

they’ve introduced to the game of hockey, a game they’ve fallen in love with.

[Cut to side-by-side shot of David Amber and Kevin Hodgson]

I have to bring in a gentleman who’s a pillar in the community and he’s been such a huge force with the HEROS – and that’s the Executive Director of the HEROS program, Kevin Hodgson. Kevin, you do great work. I love how you and the kids engage so nicely together. Tell us about the genesis of this program.

[Transition to solo shot of Kevin Hodgson]

[On-screen text: 'Kevin Hodgson, Executive Director, HEROS']

>> KEVIN HODGSON: HEROS has been around almost 20 years. And it was when we discovered that there were players who wanted to play the game that

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Kevin Hodgson]

– financial barriers and social barriers – that didn’t make that possible. So we wanted to do something about that.

[Transition to wide shot of Kevin Hodgson, David Amber, and the SuperHEROs from Regina and Edmonton]

SuperHEROS, these kids have taught us that there is nobody that can’t play. These guys have teammates who live in wheelchairs during the day, and use adaptive equipment at night to skate.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Kevin Hodgson]

And they sure feel good when they put on that brand new equipment,

[Cut to solo shot of Kevin Hodgson]

and make dreams happen.

[Transition to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: How about our first special guest? Someone who’s won an Olympic medal for Canada,

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse. Sarah waves and smiles]

[On-screen text: 'Sarah Nurse', 'Professional Hockey Player']

and that’s Sarah Nurse – who’s a member of the most prolific

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

athletic family in Canada. She joins us now. Hey Sarah!

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs. SuperHEROs waving and smiling]

>> SARAH NURSE: Hi guys, how are you? Hi! I love everyone’s jerseys that they have on, everyone looks fantastic.

[Transition to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Before we get to any more surprises and any more special guests, we’re going to send it back to Kevin who I think has a fun little game to play. Isn’t that right Kevin?

[Cut to solo shot of Kevin Hodgson]

>> KEVIN HODGSON: Yeah, so our SuperHEROS are really good at figuring out surprises.

[Cut to on-screen game of Pictionary. A silver medal, a trophy, and a jersey with the number 20 are drawn]

We’re going to do a little bit of Pictionary here and give them some clues. So does anyone know who that might be?

[Cut to solo shot of Davis]

>> DAVIS: Darnell Nurse?

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Wow! Is he here? Is he here?

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse, flipped horizontally]

[On-screen text: 'Darnell Nurse', 'Edmonton Oilers']

>> DARNELL NURSE: Hey everybody!

>> DAVID AMBER: We’ve got him sideways!

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs. SuperHEROs tilting their head to try and see Darnell properly]

>> KEVIN HODGSON: Hey SuperHEROS, let’s all turn our heads sideways so that Darnell won’t be uncomfortable.

[Transition to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: So I’m sure the kids have some questions

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs]

for Sarah and for Darnell.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Naiya. Naiya smiling and waving]

Naiya, nine year-old Naiya, all sorts of energy, beautiful hair, got the flowers – I was told you were going to have the flowers in the hair – look at the big wave there.

[Cut to solo shot of Naiya]

[On-screen text: 'Naiya']

Do you have a question?

>> NAIYA: If you would do any job besides what you do now, for one day, what would you do?

[Cut to a shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, and Naiya]

>> SARAH NURSE: I think that I would want to be like a popstar.

>> DARNELL NURSE: I might be a dog walker, because I love dogs.

>> NAIYA: Cool!

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Naiya]

>> DAVID AMBER: If you were going to have a job, what would your job be Naiya?

[Cut to solo shot of Naiya]

>> NAIYA: I would be an astronaut and go to the moon.

[Cut to solo shot of Davis]

>> DAVIS: Will he come and play in my backyard rink?

[Cut to dual shot of Darnell Nurse and Davis. Darnell smiling]

[Cut to shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse and Davis]

>> DARNELL NURSE: We might be able to make something work.

[Cut to dual shot of Darnell Nurse and Jackson]

How about you Jackson? You on vacation anywhere?

[Cut to solo shot of Jackson]

[On-screen text: 'Jackson']

>> JACKSON: Mexico!

[Cut to shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse and Jackson]

>> DARNELL NURSE: I might have to meet you there one day.

>> SARAH NURSE: Yeah, we’ll all have to be relaxing on a beach one day.

[Cut to solo shot of Meghan]

[On-screen text: 'Meghan']

>> MEGHAN: Do any of you do any art?

[Cut to dual shot of Sarah Nurse and Meghan]

>> SARAH NURSE: I think painting’s a lot of fun. I don’t think I’m very good at it.

[Cut to solo shot of Meghan]

>> MEGHAN: Do you want to see some?

[Cut to dual shot of Sarah Nurse and Meghan]

>> SARAH NURSE: Sure! Yeah!

[Cut to shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse and Meghan. Megan is showing drawings of dragons on a tablet]

>> MEGHAN: Here’s a bunch of dragons.

>> SARAH NURSE: Wow!

>> DARNELL NURSE: Nice.

[Cut to solo shot of Braxton]

[On-screen text: 'Braxton']

>> BRAXTON: What's your favourite food?

[Cut to dual shot of Darnell Nurse and Braxton. Braxton starts laughing]

>> DARNELL NURSE: Pizza. Can't go wrong with pizza.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Ashten]

>> DAVID AMBER: Hey Ashton, we haven’t heard from you yet. Do you have a question for Darnell or Sarah?

[Cut to solo shot of Ashten]

[On-screen text: 'Ashten']

>> ASHTEN: Yes, Darnell.

[Cut to dual shot of Darnell Nurse and Ashten]

When you’re getting ready for a game, do you feel any pressure at all?

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

>> DARNELL NURSE: Oh yeah. Some days I feel lots of pressure.

[Cut to dual shot of Darnell Nurse and Ashten]

I think you always have to remember, you’re playing for fun.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs]

That’s what makes this game so special, every time you get to go out there you get to be out there with your friends.

[Cut to dual shot of Darnell Nurse and Ashten]

You know that you worked hard at a game that you love.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: And Darnell, as a player in the National Hockey League,

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Darnell Nurse]

what does that mean to you, the program and what it’s providing?

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

>> DARNELL NURSE: This program has affected so many people.

[Cut to shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse and Kevin Hodgson]

Not just that receive the donations, but also as players because you get to see

[Cut to successive solo shots of all the SuperHEROs smiling]

the joy and the happiness that these kids get going out on the ice. It makes almost playing hockey even better, because we can give back to people that care so much about the game.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Ava and Milla]

>> DAVID AMBER: Ava, I think you have a question.

[Cut to solo shot of Ava and Milla]

[On-screen text: 'Ava & Milla']

>> AVA: For Sarah,

[Cut to dual shot of Sarah Nurse and Ava and Milla]

growing up did anyone ever tell you that you couldn’t play hockey because you were a girl?

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse]

>> SARAH NURSE: Yes, I was told so many times that I couldn’t play hockey because I was a girl.

[Cut to dual shot of Sarah Nurse and Ava and Milla]

We love hockey just as much as the boys do. And we definitely work just as hard as the boys do.

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse]

And I’m definitely excited for the future generations,

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs]

wanting hockey to be accessible to absolutely everybody.

>> DARNELL NURSE: I played against Sarah when we were younger, and I’ll tell you, that she was better than most if not all the boys.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Those were some awesome questions.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs]

I think there’s also a surprise coming up for all the SuperHEROS.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

Darnell, what’s the big surprise?

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

>> DARNELL NURSE: On behalf of my teammates

[Cut to shots of Jakeb, Meghan and Ava and Milla waiting with anticipation]

and all the members of the NHLPA, I’m excited to share that the NHLPA’s

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs]

Goals & Dreams fund is donating brand new equipment to your program, so you can continue to play and so you can add some new players to your team.

[The SuperHEROS cheer and clap]

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: I can tell you, there’s another special guest that is going to be joining us right now. He’s a Sonnet ambassador, and he’s a Hockey Hall of Famer, he’s in the Hall of Fame, one of the best players to ever play the game. We’re going to welcome in – Doug Gilmour.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs. All the kids wave]

There he is, hey Doug!

>> DOUG GILMOUR: Hey, how are you?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Doug Gilmour]

>> DAVID AMBER: You’ve been with Goals & Dreams now for 21 years, since it started.

>> DOUG GILMOUR: That's correct, yes.

>> DAVID AMBER: What does it mean for you Doug to see the looks on these kids’ faces?

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

[On-screen text: 'Doug Gilmour', 'Sonnet Ambassador']

>> DOUG GILMOUR: This is awesome what the NHLPA’s doing. Give a kid a chance to play.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Doug Gilmour]

>> DAVID AMBER: What do you have now Doug? I understand there’s another little surprise.

>> DOUG GILMOUR: Yes,

[Cut to solo shots of Davis, Neumann, Ava and Milla]

Sonnet Insurance is donating a full season of ice-time.

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

So the kids will even play more next year.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs]

[Everyone cheers and celebrates]

>> KEVIN HODGSON: Wow guys, isn't that great?

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

>> DOUG GILMOUR: Again, you all deserve it guys.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: That is awesome. So guys, to recap, new equipment and more ice time.

[Cut to solo shot of Braxton]

>> BRAXTON: Thank you!

[Cut to solo shot of Davis]

[Cut to solo shot of Naiya]

>> NAIYA: Thank you, this is the best day ever!

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour smiling and giving a thumbs up]

[Cut to solo shot of Kevin Hodgson]

>> KEVIN HODGSON: Neumann what did you want to say sweetie?

[Cut to dual shot of Neumann and Kevin Hodgson]

>> NEUMANN: I have a big thanks for everyone that helped.

[Cut to solo shot of Neumann]

[On-screen text: 'Neumann']

I would have never thought that I would have been here, in this place,

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Darnell Nurse, Sarah Nurse, Kevin Hodgson and the SuperHEROs]

when I was younger. I thought I would never be in a place like this, you guys are all amazing.

[Cut to solo shot of Kevin Hodgson]

[On-screen text: 'David Amber, Sports Broadcaster']

[NHLPA Goals & Dreams, Sonnet Insurance branding/watermarks]

>> DAVID AMBER: Hey everybody and welcome into another great initiative from the NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams Fund and Sonnet Insurance.

[As David Amber mentions Goals & Dreams and Sonnet, cut to the title animation]

[On-screen text: 'Everyone Deserves A Team', 'Toronto', 'In partnership with']

[Cut back to solo shot of David Amber]

I’m David Amber, host at Hockey Night in Canada and the NHL on Sportsnet. In case you’re unfamiliar with NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams initiative,

[As David Amber continues, various Hockey 4 Youth players appear on-screen waving]

they’ve been introducing people to the game of hockey, mostly kids.

[Cut back to solo shot of David Amber]

80,000+ introduced over the last 20 years, in 34 countries,

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

bringing the love of hockey to many, many people. Today we’re connecting with some new Canadians who find themselves in the Hockey 4 Youth program in Toronto.

[Transition do a dual shot of David Amber and Moe Hasham]

Let’s bring in the man who started it all – Moe Hasham.

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

[On-screen text: 'Moe Hasham', 'Executive Director & Founder, Hockey 4 Youth']

>> MOE HASHAM: My parents came to Canada in 1972.

[As Moe Hasham continues, various Hockey 4 Youth players appear on-screen smiling and waving]

I knew there were kids who would be left out of the game.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

And that’s the group that’s here today – they came to Canada as teenagers.

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

Minor hockey is not really set up to welcome them into the game.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Moe Hasham]

>> DAVID AMBER: 71% of people who come to Canada want to get involved in hockey. But, really only 1% find their way into that opportunity.

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

>> MOE HASHAM: And that’s our mission, is to make them feel socially included in Canada.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

80% of the kids feel more socially included.

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

And 91% of them say they feel better about their physical and mental health.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

The best way to build your pathway is through sport. And in Canada, it’s hockey. So that’s why we exist.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Our first surprise coming out to our Hockey 4 Youth group today is,

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

yes, Zach Hyman is here to join our call! Abner’s excited!

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

[On-screen text: 'Zach Hyman', 'Toronto Maple Leafs']

Zach how are you doing?

[Transition to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

>> ZACH HYMAN: Awesome, it’s great to meet everyone on the call here.

>> DAVID AMBER: Maybe we should start by asking them a few questions Zach? And learning a bit about them.

[Cut to solo shot of Abner, smiling and waving]

[On-screen text: 'Abner']

Abner, who’s 16, from Mexico,

[Cut to dual shot of Abner and David Amber]

July 2019 he arrived in Canada and he’s been loving hockey since then.

[Cut to wide shot of Abner, David Amber, Zach Hyman, and Moe Hasham]

Abner had a big smile when he found out you were coming on. Abner, what do you love about hockey?

[Cut to solo shot of Abner]

>> ABNER: Oh my god, so many things. But, the principle thing is how

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

you can get closer to people.

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Abner]

>> ZACH HYMAN: I remember playing with my friends – ball hockey, road hockey, skating on the pond – I’m happy you feel the same way Abner.

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and Abrar & Khaled]

>> DAVID AMBER: Khaled, what’s it like playing hockey out there on the rink with your sister?

[Cut to solo shot of Abrar & Khaled]

[On-screen text: 'Abrar & Khaled']

>> KHALED: It’s so fun to play with my sister.

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Abrar & Khaled]

>> ABRAR: Seeing him play hockey is the reason I wanted to play hockey as well.

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and Abrar & Khaled]

>> KHALED: So, I inspired you?

[All laugh]

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: That’s kind of what happens, when you grow up in a house and you have an older brother, you try to be a positive role model.

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Abrar & Khaled]

That’s great that you guys have that connection, and that you guys both share a passion. I think it’s really awesome.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Rahaf]

>> DAVID AMBER:

Rahaf, what’s it like to get out there and compete, in school, but also compete on the ice against your friends?

[Cut to solo shot of Rahaf]

[On-screen text: 'Rahaf']

>> RAHAF: The hours that I spend throughout the weeks just in hockey, can be the most fun that I wait for in the week.

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and Rahaf]

Kind of literally obsessed with since I came to Canada.

[Transition to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

>> ZACH HYMAN: What do you guys think is the hardest part about hockey?

>> CRISSHA: I learned how to skate. It was so hard.

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Crissha]

>> ZACH HYMAN: It’s not a natural movement, you’ve got to teach yourself how to do it. It’s not like running right?

>> CRISSHA: Yeah, and learning how to use the brake? It’s so hard.

>> ZACH HYMAN: Yeah, stopping. I remember when I was little, I would fall all over and fall on my face.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Blessing]

>> DAVID AMBER: Blessing, what about you? You came from Ghana. There’s not a lot of hockey in Ghana.

[Cut to solo shot of Blessing]

[On-screen text: 'Blessing']

What was it like the first time you got out on the ice?

>> BLESSING: Yeah, it was tough. I remember, going on the ice, I was excited. But, as soon as I stepped on it, it was slippery and I couldn’t even stand.

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and Blessing]

But, Coach Moe told me to keep it up, because as time goes on I will pick it up. And now, I can skate.

[Cut to solo shot of Blessing]

It’s like the best feeling that I could ever feel.

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Om]

>> OM: If you’re not going to be a hockey player, what will you be in the future?

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: Great question Om. So, writing for sure.

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Om]

I love reading and I love writing. How about you?

>> OM: Mine is cybersecurity.

>> ZACH HYMAN: Really? That’s very interesting.

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and Angel]

>> MOE HASHAM: I recruited Angel and Tony into the program so we could start the Ugandan ice hockey team, right Angel? At some point in time?

[Cut to solo shot of Angel]

[On-screen text: 'Angel']

>> ANGEL: I’m sorry, I’m shy.

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and Angel]

>> ZACH HYMAN: No you’re doing a great job Angel!

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Blessing]

>> BLESSING: Sometimes when people of colour get involved, it sometimes results in racial profiling. What do you think about that?

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: We all need to do a better job, especially in hockey, because like you said

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Blessing]

I think it’s a predominantly white sport. And I think we have to encourage everybody to get involved. And I think that’s one of our slogans as players is “hockey is for everyone”.

[Transition to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

And it doesn’t matter what your skin colour is, or your races is, or where you come from, or what your gender is. I think it has to be for everyone.

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and Blessing]

>> DAVID AMBER: That’s a really good question, and great answer Zach.

[Cut to dual shot of Zephaniah and David Amber]

Zephaniah, 17 years old, also from the Philippines.

[David Amber's frame is replaced by Zach Hyman's]

>> ZEPHANIAH: I want to ask, what is your favourite food?

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: A nice hamburger. I really, really enjoy hamburgers.

[Cut to dual shot of Zephaniah and Zach Hyman]

But I can’t have hamburgers on gameday or else I go too slow.

[Laughter]

>> ZEPHANIAH: With extra patty right?

>> ZACH HYMAN: Yeah, exactly!

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Zach do you have any announcements to make, any surprises here?

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: On behalf of my teammates and the entire NHLPA,

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

[On-screen text: 'Doug Gilmour', 'Sonnet Ambassador']

Doug Gilmour joins us now.

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

To see all these kids, what does that mean for you to see how international the game has grown to become?

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

>> DOUG GILMOUR: That’s our country. That’s what we’re all about.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Doug Gilmour]

>> DAVID AMBER: Doug, we had a really nice announcement from Zach Hyman a moment ago with new equipment for all the kids coming courtesy of the NHLPA and their Goals & Dreams. And I’m sure you have some things to share as well.

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

>> DOUG GILMOUR: I'm very proud to say,

[As Doug continues, various Hockey 4 Youth players appear on-screen smiling]

[Cut to wide shot of Zach Hyman, David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth group from Toronto]

[Cheering]

[Cut to dual shot of Doug Gilmour and Zephaniah]

>> ZEPHANIAH: We really appreciate it.

[Moe Hasham's frame replaces Zephaniah's]

>> MOE HASHAM: Dougie, whenever you want to come out and skate with us, you are more than welcome to.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Moe Hasham, and Zephaniah]

And Zephaniah, who’s a big donut connoisseur, she’ll bring the donuts for everyone to enjoy.

[Laughter]

[Cut to solo shot of Om]

[On-screen text: 'Om']

>> OM: Can I take a picture?

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Zach Hyman, and Om]

[Om takes a picture]

[NHLPA Goals & Dreams, Sonnet Insurance branding/watermarks]

>> DAVID AMBER: Hey everybody and welcome into another great initiative from the NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams Fund and Sonnet Insurance.

[As David Amber mentions Goals & Dreams and Sonnet, cut to the title animation]

[On-screen text: 'Everyone Deserves A Team', 'Calgary', 'In partnership with']

[cut back to solo shot of David Amber]

I’m David Amber from Hockey Night in Canada and Sportsnet. I’m so happy to be here.

[As David Amber continues, various SuperHEROs appear on-screen giving a 'thumbs-up']

Today we’re connecting with some amazing kids, some SuperHEROS out in Calgary.

[Cut back to solo shot of David Amber]

If you’re not so familiar with the NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams program, here’s what you need to know. For the last 20+ years they’ve been introducing kids to the game of hockey. More than 80,000 kids in 34 different countries, have been introduced to the game courtesy of Goals & Dreams. And before we meet the SuperHEROS, a key gentleman – and that’s Kevin Hodgson, the Executive Director of the HEROS program.

[As David Amber mentions Kevin Hodgson, cut to solo shot of Kevin Hodgson smiling]

[On-screen text: 'Kevin Hodgson, Executive Director, HEROS']

[As David Amber continues, his frame slides back in next to Kevin's]

Kevin you are so good with the kids, you have such a close bond in relationship with these kids. What does it mean to you to be part of this initiative?

>> KEVIN HODGSON: Our players are welcomed into the game of hockey, and are told that “you belong in this game” and “this game wants you to be a part of it”.

[Cut to solo shot of Kevin Hodgson]

Their experience kind of getting into the game was a little bit different. But when they get to do stuff like this, and feel like hockey players, it’s just so exciting be a part of it.

[Transition to wide shot of Kevin Hodgson, David Amber, and the SuperHEROs from Calgary]

I haven’t met a group of kids who love being hockey players more than the group of kids we get to see every week. If the game of hockey had more kids like these guys, the game would be in great hands.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Look at the excitement there.

[Transition to wide shot of Kevin Hodgson, David Amber, and the SuperHEROs from Calgary]

I think they’re ready to go. Let’s start, we’re going to meet Ryder and his dad Aaron.

[Punch in on Ryder's frame. Ryder smiles and waves, and his dad leans into frame briefly]

[On-screen text: 'Ryder']

10 years old, second year player, a huge Flames fan. I think Ryder’s really going to enjoy what’s going to take place over the next hour.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Ryder]

So Ryder, who do you think is joining us?

>> RYDER: Matthew Tkachuk!

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk smiling]

[On-screen text: 'Matthew Tkachuk, Calgary Flames']

>> KEVIN HODGSON: Look who it is!

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: What’s up?

[Transition to wide shot of Matthew Tkachuk, David Amber, and the SuperHEROs. SuperHEROs cheering and smiling]

What’s going on everyone?

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

I’m so excited to be on this with you guys right now, and let’s talk some hockey.

[Cut to dual shot of Matthew Tkachuk and David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Good to see you. The haircut looks good Matthew.

[Cut to wider shot of David Amber, Matthew Tkachuk, Kevin Hodgson, and Joseph]

Joseph and you have the same hairdo!

[Laughter]

[Cut to dual shot of Matthew Tkachuk and Piper]

You’re being reunited on this call, because Piper had a chance to meet you.

[Cut to still photo of Matthew Tkachuk and Piper in a locker room]

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Good to see Piper again. I remember, I think it was last year, Piper was chirping me after for me smelling not so great after my skate.

[Cut back to dual shot of Matthew Tkachuk and Piper. Piper laughing]

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Logan R]

>> DAVID AMBER: I think it’s a bit of a tradition that Logan R, he likes to ask that first question. You ready to ask Matthew Tkachuk a question Logan?

[Cut to solo shot of Logan R]

[On-screen text: 'Logan R']

>> LOGAN R: What is your plus/minus in your career?

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Oh man, this going to be tough. I think if I was better defensively, I’d have a better plus/minus, but that’s just not the case.

[Cut to wide shot of Matthew Tkachuk, David Amber, Kevin Hodgson, and Logan R]

>> DAVID AMBER: I looked it up. Let me give you a hint: it’s between 21 and 23.

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Oh, that’s way better than I thought it was going to be.

[Cut to solo shot of Jagger]

[On-screen text: 'Jagger']

>> JAGGER: What’s your favourite video game?

[Cut to dual shot of Jagger and Matthew Tkachuk]

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: The new NHL game that my brother and I have played against each other. What’s yours?

[Cut to solo shot of Jagger]

>> JAGGER: My favourite video game is Among Us.

[Cut to dual shot of Matthew Tkachuk and Evan]

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Evan, if you’re goalie and I’m coming down on five breakaways, how many are you stopping on me?

>> EVAN: Maybe two?

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: I think you could stop five out of five. I do the same move every time.

[Cut to dual shot of Matthew Tkachuk and Harrison]

>> HARRISON: What kind of washing machine do you have?

[Matthew Tkachuk laughs]

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: I’m going to have my mom answer that because she’s right there. Mom, I need you for a second.

[Cut back to dual shot of Matthew Tkachuk and Harrison]

[Chantal Tkachuk enters into Matthew Tkachuk's frame]

Harrison wants to know what washing machine’s over there.

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew and Chantal Tkachuk]

>> CHANTAL TKACHUK: It has to be a good one to wash all of Matthew’s smelly gear.

[Cut to wide shot of Matthew and Chantal Tkachuk, David Amber, Kevin Hodgson, and Harrison]

>> DAVID AMBER: Harrison washes all the team’s jerseys after practice, everyone’s.

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: That sounds like captain material right there, that’s pretty good. I’m going to start asking Gio if he wants to do that for us.

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew and Chantal Tkachuk]

[Chantal Tkachuk waves]

>> CHANTAL TKACHUK: Bye everyone!

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Thanks Mom, thanks for answering that.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

>> DAVID AMBER: Do you have an announcement you want to make Matthew?

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Yeah, so, as the NHLPA we’re proud to announce, we want to donate brand new equipment to you guys. And we’re very proud to do it.

[Cut to wide shot of Matthew Tkachuk, David Amber, and the SuperHEROs]

[SuperHEROs celebrate]

>> DAVID AMBER: Wow!

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: What do you guys think? New equipment? And we can go out and skate and we can test out the new gloves, new sticks, whatever we got, new skates?

[Cut to solo shot of Logan C and his sister]

>> LOGAN C: Wow, that is, wow.

[Cut to solo shot of Logan R]

>> LOGAN R: Thank you!

[Cut to dual shot of Matthew Tkachuk and Logan R]

I’m a pro at hockey, just like you. All because of.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: And guys, we’re not done. There’s another big surprise coming right now. We have a special guest.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Matthew Tkachuk, and the SuperHEROs]

He won a Stanley Cup, he’s one of the greatest Flames ever.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

And that is Doug Gilmour.

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

Hey Doug!

>> DOUG GILMOUR: David, how are you?

[Various SuperHEROs appear on screen, waiting in anticipation]

On behalf of Sonnet,

[Cut to wide shot of Doug Gilmour, David Amber, Matthew Tkachuk, and the SuperHEROs]

we are going to donate a lot of ice-time for you in the up-and-coming year.

[Everyone cheers and celebrates]

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Does anyone want to say anything to the Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour?

[Various SuperHEROs appear on-screen and thank Sonnet/Doug Gilmour]

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

>> DOUG GILMOUR: You’re welcome.

[Cut to solo shot of Kevin Hodgson]

>> KEVIN HODGSON: Alright, SuperHEROS, you know what we still got to do? We’ve got to do our cheer before we say bye.

[Cut to wide shot of Doug Gilmour, David Amber, Matthew Tkachuk, and the SuperHEROs]

So Doug and Matthew can join us. On the count of 3: 1…,2…,3…, who are we?

>> ALL: Hockey players!

>> DAVID AMBER: Hey everybody and welcome to the latest great moment

[As David Amber continues, cut to the title animation]

[On-screen text: 'Everyone Deserves A Team', 'Montreal', 'In partnership with']

with the NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams Fund and Sonnet Insurance.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

[On-screen text: 'David Amber, Sports Broadcaster']

I’m excited to be here, it’s David Amber host of Hockey Night in Canada and the NHL on Sportsnet.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

Today we’re hooking up with some amazing teens in the Hockey 4 Youth program in Montreal.

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

[On-screen text: 'Moe Hasham', 'Executive Director & Founder, Hockey 4 Youth']

First we’ve got to start with the founder, Moe Hasham.

[Cut to a dual shot of David Amber and Moe Hasham]

Give us a sense of what was the inspiration to get the Hockey 4 Youth program going.

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

>> MOE HASHAM: Hockey 4 Youth really started to get newcomer and high priority teens into hockey.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

And the reason why we wanted to work with this demographic is because once you’re at the age of 12, 13 years old, and you want to join ice hockey, there’s not really that natural way to get into the sport.

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

And so we wanted to make that easier by removing those barriers.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Moe Hasham]

>> DAVID AMBER: Well you should feel really proud Moe, you’ve done great things.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

I want to see if you guys can guess our first guest.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

He’s won World Junior gold, World Cup gold, World Championship gold, Olympic gold, he’s going to the Hall of Fame when his career is done, he’s a four-time Selke Award winner, the best defensive forward in the game. Any thoughts on who that might be?

[Cut to a dual shot of David Amber and Jacob. Jacob raises his hand]

Jacob?

>> JACOB: Patrice Bergeron?

>> DAVID AMBER: That’s a pretty good guess, let’s see if you’re right.

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron. Patrice is waving]

[On-screen text: 'Patrice Bergeron', 'Boston Bruins']

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: Thanks for having me. I'm happy to be here.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

>> DAVID AMBER: You have something in common with all these guys, because they’re living in Quebec, they’re big hockey fans. I imagine, as a young Patrice Bergeron, you might not have been a Bruins fan. Is that fair to say?

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: That is fair. I was from Quebec City, so I was a Quebec Nordiques fan.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

So I wasn’t either a Habs fan, sorry about that guys.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Let’s meet the teens. And we’ll start with

[Cut to solo shot of Alero. Alero waves]

[On-screen text: 'Alero']

Alero, 16 years of age.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

How did you get involved in hockey?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Alero]

>> ALERO: When I came to Canada in 2018, I was in English school.

[Cut to solo shot of Alero]

So then I moved to French school. So my teacher used to give us assignments.

[Cut to dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Alero]

My project was sports. I discovered hockey, I was like “what is happening, what is this ice, how are they skating, how are they doing that?”.

[Cut to shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham and Alero]

I found a rink near my house, and I started going there, and I fell in love.

>> DAVID AMBER: That's awesome. What was your first time on the ice like?

[Cut to solo shot of Alero]

>> ALERO: It was bad, lots of falling. I had to use the baby thing, that you hold. But it was amazing.

[Cut to dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Alero]

It was done for me, I was like “I’m in love”.

>> PATRICE BERGERON: That’s great. And just so you know I think we all go through that phase. The first few times that you try where you fall and then you’re like “Oh my god, I don’t know if I can do this”. But then the more you try,

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

the better you get and the more fun it gets also.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Jesse what about you?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Jesse]

What is it about the game you love?

>> JESSE: Well ever since I was younger, I always liked the fact that you could skate on ice in winter, that it was an actual sport.

[Cut to solo shot of Jesse]

[On-screen text: 'Jesse']

I always liked soccer, so I like the competition and the team thing, the team spirit.

[Cut to shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham and Jesse]

So, as soon as you put it into the winter sport where I couldn’t play soccer, it was just a match made in heaven.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

>> DAVID AMBER: So, you guys must have some questions. We’ve got Patrice Bergeron here, one of the greatest players.

[Cut to a dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Jacob]

>> JACOB: Is Zdeno Chara that scary in person?

[Laughter]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: That's a great question.

[Cut to a solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

At first if you see him, and don’t talk to him – yeah,

[Cut to a dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Jacob]

he’s got a mean look to him for sure. But he’s a great person.

[James replaces Jacob in the shot]

>> JAMES: What's your favourite food to eat?

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: During the season, I always eat pasta with chicken and broccoli. I know it’s very, very boring,

[Cut to dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and James]

but it reminds me of hockey then it’s my favourite food. So that’s how it works, I guess, in my brain.

[Cut to solo shot of Jacob]

[On-screen text: 'Jacob']

>> JACOB: What would you say your favourite goal was you scored in your career?

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: I’ll go back to Game 7 of

[Cut to dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Jacob]

the 2011 Stanley Cup. Being able to score in the Stanley Cup Final, and win the game obviously that was the most important part obviously, is to win with your teammates.

[Cut to solo shot of Alessia]

[On-screen text: 'Alessia']

>> ALESSIA: What’s your favourite thing about hockey?

[Cut to dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Alessia]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: I think it’s playing with the friendships that I’ve created over the years.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

In the NHL, same thing, the friendships and being able to compete with them and go through so much and learn. I mean

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

I think to me the values that you learn playing the game, that’s what I’ll remember forever.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: The next little while is going to be a lot of fun.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

Patrice why don’t you start the ball rolling, do you have anything you’d like to say?

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: I have a special announcement to make. So on behalf of my teammates,

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

and all NHLPA members, I’m excited to share that the NHLPA Goals & Dreams Fund is donating brand new equipment to your program, so you and even more friends can continue to play this great game.

[Hockey 4 Youth players all gives a thumbs up and cheer]

[Cut to a dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Moe Hasham]

>> MOE HASHAM: I just wanted to say thank you on behalf of the Hockey 4 Youth Foundation – merci beaucoup.

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

We always like to say the only barrier should be the boards, and with this equipment, we are definitely fulfilling that. So thank you very much.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: We have another special guest coming our way. And this is a Hall of Famer,

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

[On-screen text: 'Doug Gilmour', 'Sonnet Ambassador']

our Sonnet ambassador Doug Gilmour. Doug!

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

>> DOUG GILMOUR: How are you guys?

[Everyone waves]

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Doug Gilmour]

>> DAVID AMBER: So we’ve had one really nice surprise so far for the teenagers here in the Hockey 4 Youth program in Montreal.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

I think Sonnet has some good news as well Doug.

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

>> DOUG GILMOUR: On behalf of Sonnet and I, we are donating ice time

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

all of next year.

[Cheering]

[Cut to solo shot of Jesse]

>> JESSE: Thank you!

[Cut to solo shot of Jacob]

>> JACOB: Thank you very much!

[Cut to solo shot of Leah]

>> LEAH: Thank you!

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, and the Hockey 4 Youth players]

>> ALL: Thank you very much.

>> DOUG GILMOUR: Your welcome guys.

[NHLPA Goals & Dreams, Sonnet Insurance branding/watermarks]

>> DAVID AMBER: Hey everybody and welcome into another special day with the NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams Fund and Sonnet Insurance.

[As David Amber mentions Goals & Dreams and Sonnet, cut to the title animation]

[On-screen text: 'Everyone Deserves A Team', 'Ottawa', 'In partnership with']

[Cut back to solo shot of David Amber]

I’m David Amber, host of Hockey Night in Canada as well as the NHL on Sportsnet. So happy to be here.

[Transition to wide shot of Moe Hasham, David Amber, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa]

Today we’re meeting up with a great group of young women, new to Canada, and new to hockey, in the Hockey 4 Youth program in Ottawa.

[Cut back to solo shot of David Amber]

The man behind this Hockey 4 Youth program, Moe Hasham, joins us as well.

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham smiling]

[On-screen text: 'Moe Hasham, Executive Director & Founder, Hockey 4 Youth]

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Moe Hasham]

Moe, tell us about this. How do you go out and find the young women, new to Canada, and say “you know what will really help you feel great about coming to your new country”?

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

>> MOE HASHAM: We really focus on high priority communities. We go into the schools. We really like getting in front of kids and presenting to them and showing them what hockey is all about.

[Cut to wide shot of Moe Hasham, David Amber, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa]

Quite remarkable when you see girls coming from countries like Syria, and Mauritania, and Pakistan, and Ethiopia, and Somalia, to take that chance and to get out onto the ice for the first time.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Why did you feel hockey would be the right vehicle to pull these women together?

[Cut to solo shot of Moe Hasham]

>> MOE HASHAM: It’s so engrained in Canadian culture.

[Cut to wide shot of Moe Hasham, David Amber, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa]

The only barrier should be the boards. And once you’re a hockey player, you’re going to be a hockey player for the rest of your life.

>> DAVID AMBER: This is pretty cool. A group of young women, all of you brought together by the game of hockey. And I can tell you, our first guest is one of those women.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: She played in college at Wisconsin, she was a star there, then she joined the Toronto Furies in the CWHL, where she was a star there, and then she represented Canada at the Olympics in 2018, winning a silver medal.

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse]

[On-screen text: 'Sarah Nurse, Professional Hockey Player']

We’ll welcome in Sarah Nurse. Hey Sarah!

[Transition to wide shot of Moe Hasham, David Amber, Sarah Nurse and Hockey 4 Youth players where they are all waving hi to Sarah Nurse]

>> SARAH NURSE: Hey guys!

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

>> DAVID AMBER: What barriers did you face as a young girl playing a predominantly male sport?

[Cut to single shot of Sarah Nurse]

>> SARAH NURSE: I was always told by other people – different parents, different opponents – that I probably wouldn’t make it in hockey anywhere,

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

because everybody only saw the NHL. I didn’t really have that intention or a goal to reach,

[Cut to wide shot of Moe Hasham, David Amber, Sarah Nurse, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa]

and so I just wanted to have fun, and that’s what really has always driven me, and made me passionate about the game.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: I want to welcome in another guest who is going to partake in this conversation. And Sarah mentioned the NHL, the highest level of men’s hockey there is to play. And to be a superstar in the NHL, means you’re one of the best players in the world. Our next guest is exactly that –

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron. Patrice smile and waves]

[On-screen text: 'Patrice Bergeron, Boston Bruins']

Patrice Bergeron jumps in now to join this conversation.

>> PATRICE BERGERON: Thanks for having me, happy to be here. Hi everyone!

[Cut to wide shot of Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, David Amber, Sarah Nurse, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa]

>> DAVID AMBER: What does it mean to you to see all these wonderful women from across the globe, partaking in the game that you love so much?

>> PATRICE BERGERON: Oh it’s amazing.

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

I’m so proud actually to see this. I think it’s an amazing moment,

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

and that’s why we want to make sure that hockey is a safe place for everyone.

[Cut to wide shot of Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, David Amber, Sarah Nurse, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa.]

>> DAVID AMBER: Who was excited when they got out there and got a sense of getting a chance to play hockey?

[Sarah, Patrice and Hockey 4 Youth players raise hands]

Jemila, I see a big smile from you, why don’t you tell us what it was like the first time you got out on the ice.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Sarah Nurse and Jemila]

>> JEMILA: I just really love it and I have so much fun and I never get bored of it.

[Mahreen transitions into Jemila frame]

>> MAHREEN: Pakistan’s national sport is also hockey.

[Cut to solo shot of Mahreen]

[On-screen text: 'Mahreen']

When I was in Pakistan I used to skate with those, you know, the wheel skates?

[Cut back to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Sarah Nurse and Mahreen]

That’s why I was really familiar to ice skating.

[Cut to solo shot of Mahreen]

It was quite a good experience.

[Cut to solo shot of Shahad]

[On-screen text: 'Shahad']

>> SHAHAD: When I got familiar with hockey I was like “oh, that’s cool. Skating is cool”. Because for me, roller skates, my siblings used to play on it a lot. But when I tried it,

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Sarah Nurse and Shahad]

at the end of the first practice I was getting it.

[Cut to dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Shahad]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: Growing up I did a lot of roller skating and in-line skating, and that actually helped. So I can see why your first experience on the ice was easy and you felt great.

[Fade to dual shot of David Amber and Wafa]

>> DAVID AMBER: How do you like playing with your teammates Wafa?

[Cut to shot with David Amber, Wafa and Meyyada]

Meyyada, do you want to ask her in Arabic?

[Cut to dual shot of Meyyada and Wafa]

[Meyyada translates David's question for Wafa in Arabic]

[Cut to shot with David Amber, Wafa and Meyyada]

>> MEYYADA: She likes to be on the ice and trying new different things, because she’s new to Canada.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Meyyada]

>> DAVID AMBER: And Meyyada, did you find the same thing? It helps you?

>> MEYYADA: Yeah of course,

[Cut to solo shot of Meyyada]

[On-screen text: 'Meyyada']

I really like it and enjoy it.

[Cut to solo shot of Mahreen]

>> MAHREEN: What’s it like to compete for Canada in the Olympics?

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Sarah Nurse and Mahreen]

>> SARAH NURSE: Being able to play hockey there was definitely a dream-come-true for me.

>> PATRICE BERGERON: Yeah I have to agree. It was an honour, a dream-come-true.

[Cut to dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Mahreen]

A very special event for sure, something I’ll never forget.

[Cut to solo shot of Jemila asking Patrice Bergeron a question]

[On-screen text: 'Jemila']

>> JEMILA: How do you feel when you’re in a game with the crowd cheering you on and playing together?

[Cut to dual shot of Patrice Bergeron and Jemila]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: To have a chance to play in a building full of fans cheering you on is amazing. The energy, the atmosphere, the feelings that you get are hard to describe, but definitely worth it and very rewarding as well.

[Cut to solo shot of Shahad asking Sarah Nurse a question]

>> SHAHAD: Do you like to play other sports, other than hockey?

[Cut to dual shot of Sarah Nurse and Shahad]

>> SARAH NURSE: I played so many different sports growing up, and I think that’s what made me into such a good hockey player, because I had a lot of reach in a lot of different sports.

[Cut to solo shot of Meyyada asking Patrice Bergeron a question]

>> MEYYADA: What do you guys do when you have a day off?

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Patrice Bergeron, Sarah Nurse and Meyyada]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: I chase my three kids around, that’s what I do. That’s my work-out on days off.

[Laughing]

[Cut to solo shot of Anita]

[On-screen text: 'Anita']

>> ANITA: How has hockey influenced your life?

[Cut to wide shot of Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, David Amber, Sarah Nurse, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa.]

>> PATRICE BERGERON: The values that it got me. It wasn’t always easy, as I played hockey there were some ups and downs, there was some adversity I faced, and it was how to deal with it.

>> SARAH NURSE: For me, hockey has taught me so many different life skills.

[Transition to dual shot of Sarah Nurse and Anita]

But it’s also helped me become motivated, and it’s given me kind of a passion and a direction. So, hockey has definitely shaped me into the person I am today.

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron. David Amber asking him a question]

>> DAVID AMBER: Patrice, you have a little bit of a surprise for all these young women here at Hockey 4 Youth?

>> PATRICE BERGERON: Yes, I have a very special announcement actually. So on behalf of my teammates,

[Transition to wide shot of Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, David Amber, Sarah Nurse, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa.]

and the NHLPA Goals & Dreams Fund is donating brand new equipment to your program, so that you and even more friends can continue to play this great game.

>> DAVID AMBER: Wow! That’s awesome! Awesome, Patrice.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

stick around though we have another special guest coming up,

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

[On-screen text: 'Doug Gilmour, Sonnet Ambassador']

his name is Doug Gilmour. He has some news to pass along as well.

[Cut back to solo shot of David Amber]

And you guys said you were dying to get out on the ice, well maybe Doug can help with that.

[Cut to solo shots of Wafa, Mahreen, Meyyada, Mushtaq while Doug is delivering annoucement]

>> DOUG GILMOUR: Sonnet Insurance is donating a full season of ice-time.

[Transition to wide shot of Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, David Amber, Sarah Nurse, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa.]

[Audible cheering]

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>>DAVID AMBER: And Mushtaq, you said you were dying to get back out on the ice. This is great news.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Mushtaq]

>> MUSHTAQ: Yeah, thank you so much.

[Cut to solo shot of Mushtaq]

[On-screen text: 'Mushtaq']

First, thank you for being here, and I’m so happy.

[Cut to solo shot of Jemila]

>> JEMILA: I’m so excited and I just want to say thank you so much.

[Cut to wide shot of Patrice Bergeron, Moe Hasham, David Amber, Sarah Nurse, and Hockey 4 Youth players from Ottawa.]

>> DAVID AMBER: So how many of you are going to continue playing hockey as long as you can?

[Patrice Bergeron, Sarah Nurse and Hockey 4 Youth players raise their hands]

[Audible laughing]

>>DOUG GILMOUR: Yeah actually, me too.

[NHLPA Goals & Dreams, Sonnet Insurance branding/watermarks]

>> DAVID AMBER: Hey everybody and welcome into a special day for the NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams Fund and Sonnet Insurance.

[As David Amber mentions Goals & Dreams and Sonnet, cut to the title animation]

[On-screen text: 'Everyone Deserves A Team', 'Vancouver', 'In partnership with']

[Cut back to solo shot of David Amber]

I’m so happy to be here – David Amber, host of Hockey Night in Canada.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

Today we’re going to hook up with some HEROS, some amazing kids from across British Columbia.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

But first, the man who founded the HEROS program,

[Cut to solo shot of Norm Flynn]

[On-screen text: 'Norman Flynn', 'President & Founder, HEROs']

Norm Flynn.

[Transition to dual shot of David Amber and Norm Flynn]

What inspired you to start up the HEROS program?

[Cut to solo shot of Norm Flynn]

>> NORM FLYNN: Everyone deserves to play the great game of hockey.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Norm Flynn]

It shouldn’t have any barriers in front of it.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

And for us it’s bigger than hockey. For us, it’s about really creating a great human being.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Our first surprise is coming up. We have an NHL player about to join us on this call.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

I see some excitement, who’s ready to meet an NHL player?

[Zach Hyman's frame slides in next to David Amber's]

And that is Zach Hyman of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

[HEROs cheering]

Oh my goodness, they look really ready. Everyone’s ready to roll here.

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

[On-screen text: 'Zach Hyman', 'Toronto Maple Leafs']

Big special hello to Zach Hyman guys.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

>> ZACH HYMAN: Hey everyone! Hey David!

>> DAVID AMBER: How nice is it when you see these kids connected by the sport you love too, Zach?

>> ZACH HYMAN: It’s awesome, it’s awesome. And it’s great to meet everybody here. I know you guys are from Vancouver so I hope we have some Leafs fans.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

>> DAVID AMBER: So Zach, mostly some Canucks fans here. But there is one specific Leafs fan,

[Cut to solo shot of Orry]

[On-screen text: 'Orry']

and I believe that’s Orry. Right Orry? You’re a Leafs fan aren’t you?

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Orry]

>> ORRY: What is the worst part about being in the NHL? I get that there are a lot of good things, but is there a bad thing?

>> ZACH HYMAN: That’s a great question. It’s definitely easy to look at it and say, “what a dream job”, and it is.

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

It’s easy when you’re playing well and you have millions of people cheering you on. But, the flip side is, when you don’t play well,

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Orry]

you have to be able to handle the pressure and handle the media and stay even keeled. And I think that’s the hardest part.

[Orry's frame is replaced by Angus' frame]

>> ANGUS: What’s your favourite city to travel to to play there?

>> ZACH HYMAN: Vancouver’s definitely high up on my list. I love going to Vancouver.

[Angus' frame is replaced by Era's frame]

>> ERA: What is your favourite subject?

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: I love history. And that’s what I majored in when I went to university.

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Era]

And I love learning about different parts of history, and how we got to where we are now.

[Cut to solo shot of Katrina]

[On-screen text: 'Katrina']

>> KATRINA: What’s the hardest goalie you’ve had to score on?

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Katrina]

>> ZACH HYMAN: I’d say Frederik Andersen in practice.

[Katrina's frame is replaced by Deon's frame]

>> DEON: Why did you decide to be a hockey player?

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: Because it was something that I loved growing up

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Deon]

and I’ve continuously loved doing as I got older. So it’s just something that’s not really a job to me.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

What do you guys think is the hardest part about hockey?

[Cut to shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, and Angus]

>> ANGUS: Trying to get in the way of those kids that are like a head taller than you.

[Laughter]

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Ryland]

>> DAVID AMBER: Ryland, what about you? What do you like most about hockey?

[Cut to solo shot of Ryland]

[On-screen text: 'Ryland']

>> RYLAND: Playing with your friends, and getting that first feeling of scoring a goal, and falling down for the first time and actually learning how to get up.

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Ryland]

The experience is just amazing.

[Ryland's frame is replaced by Deon's frame]

>> DEON: The thrill of getting to be on ice, and then skate, but then you have to keep your balance while you’re doing it.

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: What about the wind in your face when you're skating?

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and Deon]

>> DEON: It really doesn’t happen to me, I don’t know why.

[Laughter]

>> ZACH HYMAN: It will.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sean]

>> DAVID AMBER: And Sean, what about you? What has hockey helped you with?

>> SEAN: It’s brought me more joy in life, and it’s not so much being on the ice.

[Cut to solo shot of Sean]

[On-screen text: 'Sean']

I play goalie, but when I’m not goalie, I like to try to help kids out more than I want to score. Because I think it’s really important to give other people

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Sean]

opportunities that would normally have those opportunities.

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: Hockey is such a team sport. It’s not like other sports where you have one guy who can really dominate.

[Cut to dual shot of Zach Hyman and Sean]

Often times the best player’s team doesn’t win, it’s the best team that wins. I think that aspect of hockey is something I really love,

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

that you need to rely on your teammates and those relationships that you build.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: That’s pretty cool, and anything else Zach?

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

>> ZACH HYMAN: You guys are awesome.

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

On behalf of myself, my teammates, and the whole NHLPA,

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

we would love to donate you guys a brand new set of equipment and watch you guys develop and grow as hockey players.

[Various HEROs appear on-screen looking shocked and excited, we hear several thank Zach Hyman for the NHLPA's donation.]

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver, all smiling and celebrating]

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: We’re not done though guys. That’s the first surprise. We now have another special guest and another big surprise coming your way.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

Another NHL player. This guy’s retired, but he is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. That’s where they put all the best players.

[Cut to solo shot of Doug Gilmour]

[On-screen text: 'Doug Gilmour', 'Sonnet Ambassador']

Doug Gilmour comes in and joins us now. Hey Doug!

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

>> DOUG GILMOUR: Hey David, how are you? Hey Zach!

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Doug Gilmour]

>> DAVID AMBER: Doug, I think, has something to tell you guys as well.

>> DOUG GILMOUR: Well,

[Various HEROs appear on-screen smiling in anticipation of the announcement]

Sonnet Insurance is donating a full-season of ice-time.

[Transition to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

[Clapping and celebration]

[Various HEROs appear on-screen looking shocked and excited, we hear several thank Doug Gilmour for Sonnet Insurance's donation.]

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

You're welcome.

[Cut to solo shot of Sean]

>> SEAN: I just wanted to say to Zach and Doug,

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Zach Hyman, Doug Gilmour, and Sean]

I don’t think you guys really understand how much of an impact you make on everyone. Not even just the people in this call.

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

But the thousands of kids across Canada, we all really appreciate what you’ve done.

[Cut to solo shot of Norm Flynn]

>> NORM FLYNN: On the count of 3 - 1..., 2..., 3...

[Cut to wide shot of David Amber, Doug Gilmour, Zach Hyman, Norm Flynn, and the HEROs from Vancouver]

>> ALL HEROS: Thank you very much!

>> NORM FLYNN: Awesome! You guys are great!

>> DAVID AMBER: Pleased to be joined by Maple Leafs forward, children’s author, scholastic superstar in college, a man of many hats.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

Zach Hyman of the Toronto Maple Leafs. What’s top billing for you? When you hear all these descriptions of you, what goes as the top bill?

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: It’s got to be Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s the dream growing up, and still the dream. So, lucky to be there.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

>> DAVID AMBER: Talk about full circle. You start watching it, and now you’re experiencing it. Now you’re one of the protagonists for it. We just met with a group of youths,

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

from the Hockey 4 Youth program in Toronto. New immigrants to Canada, and the one common bond they share is this new passion and love for hockey. And that’s really helped integrate them into our culture here, and make new friends, and its done a lot for their self-esteem.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

What does it mean to you to see an initiative like NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams really helping bring hockey to some groups that maybe would never get the chance to play or see the game?

>> ZACH HYMAN: I think it’s so important to all of us.

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

I speak on behalf of my teammates and the NHLPA when I say that we really want hockey to be for everyone. And we’re trying to make it as inclusive as possible. And to be able to give back to kids who may not have been in a position to play hockey, and to help them get into the game that we all love, is so important to us.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

The communal aspect of hockey is so underrated. Growing up you make so many friends, and so many teammates that become friends, just by being a part of hockey. And for them to experience it,

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

and take it away as one of their favourite things about hockey right from the start, is something that is really cool.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: You talked about accessibility and inclusiveness of hockey. What’s the biggest – not roadblock – but what’s the biggest thing you guys have to achieve to make sure it is this inclusive game that brings everyone together?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: It’s a number of things. I think, first and foremost, we have to ensure that everyone can play. I think that everyone has to play, and I think that everyone has to feel that they are included.

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

I think that, hockey is obviously a predominantly white sport, and the more people that we can get from different backgrounds that love hockey, that want to play hockey, that want to be a part of hockey, and we can show them that hockey is accepting of everybody, regardless of your race, your religion, or your gender.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

I think that it’ll make for an environment that’s inclusive. And it will only grow our sport and make it better than it already is. So I think it is extremely important.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Do you have a favourite NHL moment so far?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: Yeah, I’ve got a number.

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

I think one of my favourites wasn’t even on the ice. I think it was the first time I put on the Leafs jersey, knowing I was going to go and play in an NHL game. I kind of took a moment to take it all in because, in my head, regardless of what happened next, I achieved one of my dreams which was to play in the NHL and play for my favourite team. And then four games later I scored my first goal, so that was definitely – what a milestone, and what a feeling.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: How do you maintain that love of the game?

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: Being able to take a step back and understand that you are in the position you are because you worked so hard and because you love the game, I think is really important.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

For all hockey players it’s a rollercoaster. A rollercoaster of emotions where some days you feel like you’re on top of the world, and other days you’re just as low as could be. I think that being able to find that even keel,

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

and being able to push through adversity through your work ethic, is something that has gotten me to where I’m at today.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Do you allow yourself to think what it would be like to win a Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: Well, I think I’ve been putting it in my head since I was five years old.

[Laughter]

So it’s been there for a long time. But obviously now, being a player on the Leafs, it’s more realistic than when I was a five year old kid

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

And the only way it happens is if you can envision yourself doing it. So, I think it’s something that I envision for sure. And it’s something that obviously we want to make a reality. So, every year it’s a fresh start and we’re excited to get back at it.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Once last question. If there’s a family watching this video, or contemplating getting their son or daughter into the game of hockey, or even just skating – what advice would you like to give them?

[Cut to solo shot of Zach Hyman]

>> ZACH HYMAN: Let them have fun. You’re not going to make the NHL right away. So let them enjoy it, let them fall in love with it. And that’s really the only way that you can progress, is if you truly love it and you have fun with it. And you’ll make the most amount of friends being a great teammate and being a great person and having fun with it. A bunch of my friends are guys I played with in college, or in junior, and obviously my teammates.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Zach Hyman]

They would make so many relationships in hockey and I think the key thing is that you enjoy it, and you continue to enjoy it as you progress as a player.

>> DAVID AMBER: Well, with Zach Hyman, it was “Go Blue” when it was college, now it’s “Go Blue and White” with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Zach, you’re always a gentleman and scholar and a great guy. So, thanks for your time here and continued success to you.

>> ZACH HYMAN: Thanks David, appreciate it, you too.

Goals & Dreams x Sonnet Insurance, Patrice Bergeron 1 on 1 - Transcription

[Intro animation]

[NHLPA Goals & Dreams, Sonnet Insurance branding/watermarks]

[Various sound effects: organ, skate cutting through ice, cheering]

[On-screen text: 'Everyone Deserves a Team', 'Featuring', 'Patrice Bergeron', 'in partnership with']

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

[On-screen text: 'David Amber', 'Sports Broadcaster']

>> DAVID AMBER: Pleased to be joined by one of the greatest players we’ve seen in this generation – that’s Patrice Bergeron.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

What can we say Patrice? The resumé looks pretty good: Stanley Cup winner, World Cup, World Junior, World Championship, Olympic gold, you’ve done it all. Great to have you here. And the best part of what you’re doing as far as leaving a legacy is you’re helping kids as well in the NHLPA’s Goals and Dreams program.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

We just met up with some kids in the Hockey 4 Youth program in Montreal. What does it mean for you to see the look on their eyes when you’re able to say, “hey, we’re going to get you some new equipment, we’re going to get you some ice time,

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

and we want you to be a part of this great hockey community”?

>> PATRICE BERGERON: It’s amazing. It’s kind of what you want. The whole goal of this program is to be able to reach out.

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

You try to do your work on the ice, but it goes beyond that. I think the most gratifying thing for me is to be able to help and to reach out to the community and be able to make a difference in someone’s life – whether it’s big or small. Try to leave an impact, or make an impact somewhere.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

>> DAVID AMBER: And why do you think it’s so important to make hockey accessible to as many people as possible?

>> PATRICE BERGERON: Well first of all, it helps grow the game, and that’s kind of what you want. You want to make sure everyone has access to this beautiful game.

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

You can learn so many valuable lessons in life. Just to put on the equipment, but also to win and lose - learn how to do that, learn how to play with teammates.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

Everyone deserves a team, everyone deserves to be a part of it.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: One thing about when you see accomplished people like yourself, is people see the end result and they say “Well, Patrice Bergeron, he’s just a naturally gifted guy. He worked hard and things worked out”. They don’t necessarily know all the obstacles you faced.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

Back, what, 10-12 years ago? You had a pretty serious head injury. You missed 6 months of one season and a lot of people thought, “this could be it, that could be the end of his career”. What do you remember most about that and the resilience it took to fight back to become the player you became?

>> PATRICE BERGERON: Yeah, that was tough. There was a very difficult year, and beyond. It took me a few years to really get back to where I wanted to be.

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

You’re going to face adversity. There’s going to be some obstacles in front of you that, in that particular moment, are going to be heartbreaking. And you might think “this is it, I can’t do this anymore, I can’t go past that”. But then you realize that those are there for a reason, to make you learn something, make you grow as a person, make you be better, and work harder, and find ways.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

My path was not just an easy path. I wasn’t making the elite teams every year, even growing up. I was getting cut and I wasn’t very big. So I had to fight my way there. I think, hopefully a lot of people can relate to that. Kids that are growing up, that have a dream, that it’s not always easy.

>> DAVID AMBER: That what I love about it, your messaging is so spot on.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

Especially for the kids in the Hockey 4 Youth group, the kids in the Super Heroes group, people who have had to have some challenges and to show the resilience and grit you’ve shown is a great example for them

[Cut to solo shot of Patrice Bergeron]

in trying to live out their dreams as well.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

Well you’ve been a great representative for Canada, for the Bruins, and for the hockey community in total,

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Patrice Bergeron]

for the NHLPA and their Goals and Dreams program. So thanks so much Patrice, continued success, we can’t wait to see you back on the ice.

>> PATRICE BERGERON: Thank you so much and much appreciated.

Matthew, we just had so much fun with the NHLPA’s Goals - Superheroes in Calgary. What does it mean for you to engage with the fans and really,

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

kids who maybe otherwise wouldn’t have had a chance to get introduced to the game of hockey. The PA makes a point of saying we want to include everyone in this game. What does that mean to you?

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Well you just said it there. It’s a game for everybody, and being able to talk to with these kids today it really makes you realize that the sport’s for everybody. And being back in Calgary when we were able to do this in person, and see all these kids that we see a couple of times a year at the rink, it’s one of my favourite days.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

We talked a little about this earlier, but just the smiles they have – there’s just no bad days.

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

It’s special to us to give back, but it’s not really giving back when you learn more from them than they do from you. They’re special kids.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

>> DAVID AMBER: What impression did your dad make with you? Keith, all-star many times in the National Hockey League. What impression did he make with you about how to conduct yourself, you and your brother Brady, off the ice? To engage with the community in the way you do.

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Well, I think he was forcing that as a young player too.

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

He moved from Winnipeg to Arizona, where they had to grow the game down there.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

He was in around the community whenever he wasn’t at the rink. And I think he’s kind of kept that when he came to St. Louis.

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

Him and all the alumni have stuck around, helped out in the community, helped out with similar things. And its trickled on down to my brother and I. And it’s so fun, so fun to deal with. It’s so great to see different kids with different backgrounds, and whatever they have going on in their lives, able to come and play sport that they love, and that we’ve loved ever since we were born.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: What about the influence of your mom Chantal? How has she helped mold the Matthew Tkachuk we see today?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: She’s probably been the most influential person. Everybody, along with my dad. But she was there ever since –

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

and people know how hockey travel is – she was there every moment when I was younger. I went skating for the first time with her, she was the only one there. I think she tells the story, it was like ‘Coyotes and Pups Skate’ or something in Arizona, something ridiculous.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

She was out there. Her back was probably hurting a ton after dragging me around. I think she got me to really love the game because she was putting me out there a lot. And it was great to have parents that didn’t force me into it, even though my dad played and was a great player.

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

They were just putting me in positions so I could, if I wanted to, I could love it. And I did, I fell in love with it. And then they pushed me ever since and I can’t thank them enough.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Listen, you’re a bit of an enigma, because the average hockey fan, if they’re not a Calgary Flames fan, might go “oh man, Matthew Tkachuk, he’s such a pain in the butt when my team plays against him”, and then off the ice

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

you’re this engaging, gentlemanly-like person.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

How do you have this great dichotomy where you can be that fierce on the ice, but a pretty chill guy off the ice?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: I’ve really tried off the ice to show my personality, and I’ve done that every year I’ve played in the league. And I just think that’s very important,

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

especially for hockey players, we don’t show off our personalities as much. Everybody that meets me that doesn’t love me on the ice, I’m sure they say the opposite off the ice.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

I try to have fun, and try to be nice and respectful to everyone I come in contact with. I think when it comes down to it, you have way more years in your life where you’re not playing hockey,

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

as opposed to when you’re playing, eventually when you retire. So, got to have those important relationships, and be great to everybody, and I’ve tried to really have that – especially in my four years.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

>> DAVID AMBER: What do you want to accomplish before you are 30 years old?

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Well, I’ve got eight more seasons before that. So, I want to win,

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

more than anything, a few championships in that span. You know what, it’s a tough task to win that thing, and to hoist that thing. But, there’s nothing in hockey I want more.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: Have you allowed yourself to think about what it would be like, with the Cup over your head,

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

going on the red mile in Calgary, to that group of fans that have an insatiable appetite for the game as you know.

>> MATTHEW TKACHUK: Yeah,

[Cut to solo shot of Matthew Tkachuk]

I’ve got the vision in my head and I hope it can come to life one day.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Matthew Tkachuk]

One of the fiercest competitors in the game, an all-around good guy. If you hadn’t had a chance to learn a little bit about Matthew Tkachuk, don’t be fooled by what you see on the ice, because he plays hard, but he’s a good guy as well. Thanks so much Matthew for your time here.

>> DAVID AMBER: Great to be alongside, from the Edmonton Oilers, Darnell Nurse.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Darnell Nurse]

Darnell, sounds funny – the Edmonton Oilers, Darnell Nurse. I mean, you started out as a humble kid in Hamilton. What do you make of where you’ve come, the journey you’ve been on? Let’s start at the beginning, the first time you laced on the skates. What did it mean to you to fall in love with this game?

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

>> DARNELL NURSE: Yeah, this game has become so much more to me than a game. It’s become something that – I have some of my strongest relationships in my life have come from this game.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Darnell Nurse]

It really all started in Hamilton and my dad taking me out to public rinks for private skates in the afternoon.

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

There’s nothing better than just passing the puck around, skating around with your old man. I was very fortunate that he would take some extra time out of his day to go skate with me. And those are definitely my favourite memories.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Darnell Nurse]

>> DAVID AMBER: Darnell, is it fair to say, when someone makes it to the National Hockey League it’s not just that player, it’s their family that has achieved that level of excellence?

>> DARNELL NURSE: Yeah exactly.

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

I think, once you get to the NHL you look back on all these people that made so much sacrifice for you. I think you nailed it right on the head – it’s not just you that makes it to the NHL, it’s everyone that has been there supporting you every step of the way. And I’d never forget that.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: What does it mean for you to be involved in an initiative like Goals & Dreams?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Darnell Nurse]

Because you’re involved not just as a player, but you do things out in the community – engaging fans, engaging kids.

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

What does that mean for you?

>> DARNELL NURSE: Yeah, I think that’s a big part of the hockey community. It’s not just a community where people want to just put money there and let whatever happens happen, put it in other people’s hands. The hockey community as a whole, guys want to affect and be a better part of someone’s day, no matter how that is. Whether it’s bringing them equipment, getting a meal for someone.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Darnell Nurse]

Kids that maybe thought they would never have the opportunity to play hockey – the Goals & Dreams team comes along and gives them that opportunity.

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

If you’re a part of the hockey community, you never really take it for granted.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: I’ll leave you with this: there is so much to feel good about in this country. What hockey brings, it really is that fabric that binds so many people together.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Darnell Nurse]

What does it mean to you – you grew up in Hamilton, you’re playing in a Canadian market in Edmonton, I know you spend a lot time in Toronto as well – the importance of the sport you play? What does it mean to you

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

that people care so passionately about the game here?

>> DARNELL NURSE: Yeah, I think the passion and the care for the game is what makes this game special. For anyone who plays or has an opportunity to play in a Canadian market, it’s just over the top how passionate these fans are for you.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Darnell Nurse]

You can’t go out to the grocery store or a restaurant without someone saying “good luck”.

[Cut to solo shot of Darnell Nurse]

Anytime you have the opportunity to play in front of passionate fans that care about the game, there’s really nothing better.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Darnell Nurse]

>> DAVID AMBER: Well, you’ve been a gentleman and a great player your whole career. It’s been so much fun to watch you from a young boy, now into an NHL elite player. Darnell Nurse, thanks so much for your time.

>> DARNELL NURSE: Thanks David.

Goals & Dreams x Sonnet Insurance, Sarah Nurse 1 on 1 - Transcription

[Intro animation]

[NHLPA Goals & Dreams, Sonnet Insurance branding/watermarks]

[Various sound effects: organ, skate cutting through ice, cheering]

[On-screen text: 'Everyone Deserves a Team', 'Featuring', 'Sarah Nurse', 'in partnership with']

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

[On-screen text: 'David Amber', 'Sports Broadcaster']

>> DAVID AMBER: So happy to be joined by one of the young great players in the game today – Sarah Nurse.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

A star at Wisconsin, a star with the Toronto Furies, as well as a star with Team Canada at the 2018 Olympics, where she took home a silver medal. Sarah, that’s a pretty good hockey resumé. And before you had this big, glowing hockey resumé, you were just a young girl starting out in the game.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

What does it mean to you to be – you know you’re a young woman still – but you are a role model for even younger women and girls who are getting started in the game?

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

>> SARAH NURSE: It’s definitely a privilege for me, the fact that I have the possibility to make an impact on some little girl’s life. I think that’s amazing. For me, when I was growing up,

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse]

I lacked the female role models. And that’s not because they weren’t there, it’s because I was just never able to see them. So I want to share my story and my experience, so that if one little girl identifies with that, I want to be able to help them along the way, and on their hockey journey, and with whatever they really want to do.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: It’s been about 20 years since the first time you put on a pair of skates and fell in love with the game.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

How much has the landscape changed? How much has it evolved to be more inclusive, more accepting of women, and women of colour, to be embraced to play in this hockey community?

>> SARAH NURSE: Yeah, I think a lot has changed since I strapped the double blades on when I was three, four years old, way back in the day on the outdoor rink.

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse]

But, I definitely think the landscape has changed. I mean, when I was growing up I only saw women on TV playing hockey once every four years at the Olympics. Now we’re fortunate enough to see the Olympics on TV, but we also see the World Championship every year, and that’s a step in the right direction. Hopefully soon we’re going to have our own women’s professional league, so that young woman can dream of playing professional hockey, just like the boys do.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

>> DAVID AMBER: What does that mean to have something to be striving for – whether it’s NCAAs or whether it’s professional hockey?

>> SARAH NURSE: I think it’s so important. For me, before I had a goal of playing the Olympics after seeing those women in 2002, I didn’t have any goals or intentions.

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse]

I just was playing a sport I liked. Once I saw an entire team of females playing hockey, I was like “I want to be on that team”, because there are other women in the world who love hockey as much as I do.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

The fact that I was able to see that is what inspired me to continue playing hockey, and to excel, and to do the little things that I had to do to make that team one day.

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse]

Having a professional league is just going to increase the visibility for women in sport, and women in hockey, so that they can see what they eventually want to be.

[Cut to solo shot of David Amber]

>> DAVID AMBER: One last question for you Sarah. There’s going to be some young parents that maybe see this interview and they’re contemplating,

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

“Should we get our daughter into hockey?” – give them the sales pitch. What would it be? We know what that game has meant to you, what do you think their daughter might find in the game of hockey?

>> SARAH NURSE: I think that hockey is the greatest game in the world. It’s one of the most complex games out there. And I think when you look at the kids’ athletic abilities –

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse]

the fact that they’re able to stay on two skates, on a little thin blade, on ice – is pretty incredible. I think hockey has just given me so much. It’s given me the quality time with my family, it’s created so many incredible relationships through friendships,

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

I’ve had so many amazing opportunities and been able to meet cool people, gone to so many different places, and I think that without hockey I wouldn’t be the person I am today. It’s taught me some life skills, leadership,

[Cut to solo shot of Sarah Nurse]

discipline, and teamwork. And I think it’s given me a little bit of a compete and motivation that I definitely wouldn’t have had, had I not picked up a hockey stick when I was five.

[Cut to dual shot of David Amber and Sarah Nurse]

>> DAVID AMBER: Well every time we talk I learn something new from you Sarah. First of all, you’re a great ambassador for the game, and what I love about you is you’re so thankful that you got a part of the game, and now you’re giving back to the next generation of young women and young boys who want to follow in your skate steps, I guess you’d say. And for their love of the game and interest in the game. So awesome, you know what, you’ve been a great ally with the NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams and a great spokesperson as well with Sonnet and everything they’re doing as well to promote the game. So thanks so much for your time Sarah.

>> Sarah Nurse: Thank you so much Dave.
