MovingWaldo co-founder, Philippe Tardif-Michaud on how the insurance and moving industries are changing (for the better)
MovingWaldo co-founder, Philippe Tardif-Michaud on how the insurance and moving industries are changing (for the better)

As exciting as moving can be, one thing almost everyone can agree on is how stressful even the smallest tasks can be. Just like Sonnet, MovingWaldo is working to streamline and simplify these tasks to take the stress out of moving. Started by Philippe Tardif-Michaud and Guillaume Lahoud, both native of Quebec, MovingWaldo is a tool that takes care of all your address changes in one place. Everything from your Internet provider to your insurer, is taken care of. We recently chatted with Philippe about all things tech, and how they got the inspiration behind MovingWaldo.

What inspired you to start MovingWaldo?

Philippe:

I would say personal experience, like most entrepreneurs. My co-founder and I had moved quite a bit through work – we had a lot of opportunities that led us to Montreal, Edmonton, etc. So, we just realized that having to go through the burdensome task of changing your address through all of your providers was pretty painful. All of the utility transfers, things that get lost in the mail – you name it, and we just thought, people don’t need that added stress on top of moving.
Moving Day (July 1st) is a big part of Quebec culture. Do you think that it played a role in the creation of MovingWaldo?

Philippe:

As Quebecers we move a lot, so launching in this market made sense. It’s a market that we know very well, and we knew that a big chunk of the population moves on the same day, July 1st. So, for us it was a good way to pilot MovingWaldo with all the movers in Quebec, which allowed us to scale it to the rest of Canada. Moving Day was a good way to test the technology and get feedback from users.
Why do you think the approach of putting customers first is important?

Philippe:

It’s so important nowadays, because people are realizing that there’s a better way to do things. I know it’s probably been like that for a while, but now we have technology as an important factor. Even with older industries, like insurance, they need to modernize and simplify these tasks to make them easier and faster for people. Just like the moving industry, things need to be built consumer-first because that’s how you’re really going to have an impact on people’s lives.

Why is it important to simplify everything?

Philippe:

Well, I just think people are busier. There’s more pressure on people’s personal lives, on their professional lives. People will jump at the chance to make annoying or mundane tasks easier for themselves. Like shopping for insurance – or even reading their insurance documents – and having to change your address (with all of your providers that are easy to forget). We have the technology to help people through things they don’t like doing, while also saving them time.
Why did you think it made sense for Sonnet and MovingWaldo to partner up?

Philippe:

Right off the bat, we knew that people who are moving are also looking to update their insurance or they’re shopping around for a new insurance provider. Moving is a chance to compare your current insurance or buy it if you don’t already have it. Five minutes is enough time to get a quote on sonnet.ca, and it’s also enough to change your address on MovingWaldo.
And that’s how it should be! Let’s talk about insurance… Why is it so important to have home insurance?

Philippe:

That’s an obvious one! A lot of our users are tenants, and don’t always see how important it is to have tenant insurance. We like to stress that all of your stuff isn’t protected by your landlord’s insurance. Back in the day, I learned that the hard way when my apartment got broken into and I didn’t have insurance to help replace all my things. I was young, and renting a place at the time and I really had no idea that I needed tenant insurance. Now, for me, having insurance is not only to protect your belongings but it’s also about having someone there to support you when it comes to taking care of a painful situation.

You got a quote from Sonnet – how did it go?

Philippe:

I did! And as a tech entrepreneur, I really wanted to challenge your site. I wanted to see how fast and efficient it really was, so I actually got a quote while I was walking to this interview! And it was great. I wanted to go through it on mobile – because most people use their phones to do everything now. I was able to get a quote within five minutes; Sonnet auto-filled a lot of information, which made the quoting process very seamless. You should be able to get an insurance quote or change your address within a subway ride. That’s how we should think.
